Benjamin Banneker
A free-born Maryland farmer, Benjamin Banneker taught himself calculus and astronomy from borrowed books and built one of the earliest wooden clocks in America. He accurately predicted a 1789 solar eclipse and published six almanacs of tide charts, weather patterns, and celestial calculations. In 1791 he assisted in surveying the boundaries of the future District of Columbia, and later corresponded with Thomas Jefferson arguing against slavery.
