Hiram Rhodes Revels

An African Methodist Episcopal minister and Civil War Union chaplain, Hiram Rhodes Revels was elected by the Mississippi legislature in 1870 to complete an unexpired term in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African American ever to serve in either house of Congress. His seating was fiercely contested and finally decided by a 48-8 vote. He later served as the first president of Alcorn State University.

“The Negro is a subject of American statesmanship as well as of American Christianity.”
