Fannie Lou Hamer

A Mississippi sharecropper turned freedom fighter, Fannie Lou Hamer was beaten, jailed, and fired from her plantation job for trying to register to vote. She co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and delivered a televised address at the 1964 Democratic National Convention that shook the nation. Her work founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative, which fed and housed hundreds of poor Black families in the Delta.
