Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was the chief legal architect of the modern Civil Rights Movement. As lead counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund he argued 32 cases before the Supreme Court and won 29, including the landmark Brown v. Board of Education, which struck down school segregation in 1954. In 1967 he became the first African American appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served for 24 years as a fierce defender of civil liberties.

“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps.”
