Booker T. Washington

Born into slavery in Virginia, Booker T. Washington worked in salt furnaces and coal mines before walking five hundred miles to attend Hampton Institute. In 1881 he founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which under his leadership became a leading center of Black higher education. He advised Presidents Roosevelt and Taft, published the bestselling memoir Up From Slavery, and helped fund thousands of rural schools across the South.

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles overcome.”
