Harriet Tubman

Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman escaped in 1849 and returned again and again as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, guiding roughly seventy enslaved people to freedom. During the Civil War she served as a scout, spy, and armed guide for the Union Army, leading the Combahee River Raid that freed more than seven hundred people. Her later life was devoted to women's suffrage and to caring for the elderly and the poor.
