Percy Lavon Julian

The grandson of enslaved people and a chemist barred from academic jobs because of his race, Percy Julian pioneered the industrial synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants. His work made cortisone affordable to arthritis patients, produced a soy-based fire-suppressant foam that saved lives in World War II, and led to over 100 patents. He founded Julian Laboratories, which he later sold, becoming one of the first Black American millionaires from science.

“You can hardly go anywhere in America now where a Negro is not making some real contribution.”
