Carter G. Woodson

The son of formerly enslaved parents and only the second African American to earn a Harvard PhD in history, Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in 1915 and launched the Journal of Negro History the next year. In 1926 he established Negro History Week, which became today's Black History Month. He is remembered as the "Father of Black History."

“If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition.”
