Lewis Latimer

The son of fugitive slaves and a Union Navy veteran, Lewis Latimer taught himself drafting and became one of the leading patent draftsmen of his day. He drew the plans for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent in 1876. Two years later he invented a carbon filament that made the incandescent light bulb longer-lasting and cheaper, and he supervised installations of electric lighting in New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, and London.

“We create our future by well improving present opportunities, however few and small they may be.”
