Ella Baker

Behind nearly every great Civil Rights organization stood Ella Baker. She served as national director of the NAACP branches in the 1940s, helped Martin Luther King Jr. build the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and mentored the students who founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. Baker believed movements should be led by the grassroots rather than by celebrity leaders, a philosophy still shaping activism today.

“Give light and people will find the way.”
