Septima Poinsette Clark
A Charleston-born teacher fired for her NAACP membership, Septima Poinsette Clark answered by building the Citizenship Schools that taught tens of thousands of Black Southerners to read, write, and pass the literacy tests standing between them and the ballot. She trained Rosa Parks at Highlander Folk School shortly before the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and under her leadership the citizenship program moved to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where Martin Luther King Jr. called her "the mother of the movement." She served on the Charleston County School Board and received the Presidential Living Legacy Award from Jimmy Carter.
