Ralph Ellison

Ralph Ellison's 1952 novel Invisible Man won the National Book Award and is widely regarded as one of the finest American novels of the twentieth century. Born in Oklahoma and trained as a classical trumpeter at Tuskegee, Ellison brought a musician's ear to prose, weaving folk speech and jazz sensibility into a chronicle of what it meant to be seen — and unseen — in Cold War America.

“I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.”
