Madam C. J. Walker

Born Sarah Breedlove to formerly enslaved Louisiana parents, Madam C. J. Walker built a haircare empire from her kitchen table and became one of the first women in America — and the first documented Black woman — to become a self-made millionaire. She trained thousands of "Walker agents" as independent Black saleswomen and donated widely to Black schools, the NAACP anti-lynching fund, and the arts.

“I got my start by giving myself a start.”
