Daniel Hale Williams

In 1893 Daniel Hale Williams performed one of the first documented successful pericardial surgeries — repairing a stab wound to the heart of a young Chicago patient who lived another 20 years. In 1891 he founded Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the United States and home to the first nursing school for African Americans. He co-founded the National Medical Association in 1895.
