Garrett Morgan

The son of formerly enslaved parents, Garrett Morgan left school after the sixth grade and taught himself the tools of invention. In 1914 he patented a smoke hood — an early gas mask — that saved workers trapped in a Lake Erie tunnel disaster in 1916. In 1923 he patented a three-position traffic signal that became the ancestor of the modern stoplight, later selling the rights to General Electric.

“If a man puts something to block your way, the first time you go around it, the second time you go over it, and the third time you go through it.”
