Julian Abele

The first African American to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Architecture, Julian Abele became chief designer at the influential firm of Horace Trumbauer and contributed to more than four hundred buildings. He was the principal designer of Duke University's West Campus, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Widener Library at Harvard. For most of his career his role was uncredited because of the era's racial barriers.

“The lines are all Mr. Trumbauer's, but the shadows are all mine.”
