Gail Fisher

Born in Orange, New Jersey, Gail Fisher broke color lines in American advertising before she broke them on television, becoming the first Black woman to speak dialogue in a national TV commercial. Cast as private-eye secretary Peggy Fair on the CBS series Mannix, she made history in 1970 as the first African American actress to win a Primetime Emmy for a dramatic series and picked up two Golden Globes for the same role. Her sustained visibility in a leading network drama helped open primetime television to a generation of Black actresses who followed.

“I never thought of myself as a Black actress — I thought of myself as an actress, period.”
