Bastian Karpata

Bastian Karpata (sometimes recorded as Bazran Karpata) was a co-commander of the 1795 Curaçao Slave Revolt alongside Tula, Pedro Wacao, and Louis Mercier. From the plantations of Bandabou he helped mobilise more than a thousand enslaved workers, presenting the colonial authorities with formal demands for emancipation modelled on the ideals of the Haitian and French Revolutions. When the Dutch responded with troops rather than negotiation, Karpata led armed resistance for nearly a month. Captured after the leaders were betrayed, he endured brutal interrogation without revealing his network and was executed in October 1795. He is honoured today as one of Curaçao's founding heroes of freedom.
