Diane Nash

As a Fisk University student in Nashville, Diane Nash helped lead the sit-ins that desegregated the city's lunch counters and became a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. When the original Freedom Riders were beaten out of Alabama in 1961, she organized the second wave that carried the campaign to its historic conclusion. She was a key strategist of the Selma voting-rights campaign and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.

“Freedom, by definition, is people realizing that they are their own leaders.”
