Nelson Mandela

Lawyer, revolutionary, and prisoner of conscience for 27 years, Nelson Mandela emerged from Robben Island to negotiate the peaceful end of South African apartheid alongside President F. W. de Klerk. In 1994 he was elected the country's first Black head of state in its first fully democratic election. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and founded initiatives combating HIV/AIDS, poverty, and educational inequality across Africa.
