Louis Armstrong

The grandson of enslaved people and a child of the New Orleans Colored Waif's Home, Louis Armstrong reshaped popular music with a trumpet and a gravelly voice heard on "What a Wonderful World" and hundreds of other recordings. His improvisational virtuosity turned jazz from an ensemble tradition into a soloist's art. He toured the world as an unofficial American ambassador for four decades of the twentieth century.

“If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.”
