Elijah McCoy

Born in Canada to fugitive-slave parents and trained as a mechanical engineer in Scotland, Elijah McCoy invented an automatic lubricator in 1872 that allowed steam engines to be oiled while in motion, saving countless hours of downtime. Over his life he received 57 patents, mostly for lubrication systems. The phrase "the real McCoy" is popularly said to refer to buyers demanding his authentic product over cheap imitations.

“Do not despise humble beginnings.”
