Charles R. Drew

Charles R. Drew was a surgeon whose research on blood transfusions revolutionized emergency medicine. His doctoral thesis on blood-banking led to large-scale plasma programs credited with saving thousands of Allied lives during World War II. He directed the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and later chaired the department of surgery at Howard University, where he trained a generation of Black surgeons.

“Excellence of performance will transcend artificial barriers created by man.”
