Colin Powell

The son of Jamaican immigrants to the South Bronx, Colin Powell rose through 35 years of Army service to become a four-star general and, in 1989, the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2001 he became the first African American U.S. Secretary of State, serving under President George W. Bush. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice and championed education charities for at-risk youth.

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
