Zora Neale Hurston

Novelist, playwright, and pioneering anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston chronicled Black Southern life with a rare ear for its music. Her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God is now taught as an American classic. She traveled through Haiti and the Deep South collecting folklore, hoodoo practices, and oral histories, and her insistence on Black joy as a subject worthy of literature was a quiet revolution in a segregated America.

“Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me.”
