Muhammad Ali

Three-time heavyweight world champion, Muhammad Ali fused astonishing athletic gifts with an insistence on Black pride and religious freedom. Refusing induction into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he was stripped of his title and convicted of draft evasion before the Supreme Court unanimously overturned the conviction. Ali's stand cost him the peak years of his career and made him a global symbol of principled resistance and humanitarian conscience.
