Ida B. Wells

Born into slavery in Mississippi and orphaned at sixteen, Ida B. Wells raised her siblings while working as a teacher and journalist. In the 1890s she launched an investigative crusade against lynching, publishing Southern Horrors and A Red Record, which documented the true motives of white mob violence. She co-founded the NAACP, marched for women's suffrage, and was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2020.

“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”
