Queen Nanny

Queen Nanny — Granny Nanny of the Windward Maroons — was an Ashanti spiritual and military leader who freed enslaved Africans and defended Jamaica's Blue Mountains against British colonial forces in the early eighteenth century. From her stronghold of Nanny Town she outmaneuvered the empire through guerrilla warfare and negotiated a 1740 land treaty that secured Maroon freedom. She is the only woman among Jamaica's seven National Heroes and is depicted on the country's $500 banknote.

“The land is ours, and the freedom to walk upon it is ours.”
